Eighth Grad Camp Orkila Overnight Fieldtrip

For the past two years, the eighth graders of Eckstein have taken a fieldtrip to Camp Orkila at the beginning of the school year. Camp Orkila has been a setting for outdoor adventure since its conception in 1906. It is quite possible that some of your parents, grandparents, or even great-grandparents attended Orkila as a child.

The trip for next school year will be October 10, 11 and 12. A complete Camp Orkila Packet will be available at the beginning of the 2018-19 school year.

    Getting There
The commute to and from Camp Orkila includes:

    • 90-minute bus ride from Eckstein to the Anacortes ferry terminal
    • 1-hour ferry ride to Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands
    • 20-minute drive to the camp
    About Camp Orkila
The camp is set on 265 acres of forest, fields, and a beachfront in the northwest corner of the island and enjoys a view overlooking President Channel and the Canadian Gulf Ilslands. The camp is dedicated to the YMCA mission of building a community where individuals are encouraged to develop to their fullest potential. As part of this tradition, students and chaperones are housed in rustic cabins. Each cabin has 10-12 built in bunks and has no heat. Bathhouses with toilets and shower facilities are located within a short walking distance. Because the facilities are located within a short walking distance. Because the facility is large, students will be doing lots of walking on the trip.

During the three days, students will do a variety of activities such as zipline, high ropes, team building, kayaking, pottery to name a few as well as one elective class of their choice. Because the purpose of the trip is to build community, students will be assigned to cabins and groups randomly.

    Paying for Camp Orkila
The cost of the trip will be $200. Permission slips will be handed out on the first day of school in September and you will have two and a half weeks to return the field trip packet. Eckstein would like to make sure all eighth graders can go to Camp Orkila, therefore, if you need a scholarship please indicate that on your paperwork.

    Chaperones Needed
We expect to take appropriately 300 students on the trip with 16-18 staff members going. However, to take this trip, will will also need 35-60 parent chaperones. We would ideally like to have 2 parent chaperones to every 10  students in each cabin.

If you are interested in volunteering as a chaperone for this trip, please contact Celeste Hansen at crhansen@seattleschools.org.  Please review Volunteering at Eckstein to understand the forms and requirements for volunteering on an overnight field-trip.
