Counseling
Eckstein Student Support Team
Eckstein Middle School provides students with access to a comprehensive school counseling program. We are very fortunate to have one professional school counselor assigned to each of our grade-level houses. Bryan Manzo in 6th grade, Michael J. Hoff in 7th grade and Reema Ziadeh in 8th grade.
Our grade level counselors support our students in their academic growth, personal social development and college and career readiness through a wide variety of evidence-based modalities:
- Classroom lessons
- Small group work
- Individual support
Counselors are also members of BLT, Subject Matter Specialist, MTSS, and Student Support Services.
Eckstein School Counseling Mission & Vision
- Support every student in meeting their academic growth goals.
- Mentor students to their best social and personal development.
- Prepare students for the next step in the pursuit of the college and career goals.
- Support students learning/practicing/applying social emotional skills.
MTSS Academic Fundamentals Counselor Mentoring Program
TIER 2 MTSS) As part of our pathway to supporting student academic success, counselors run a monthly Academic Fundamentals Mentoring Program. Through our Multi-Tier Systems of Support, our grade level teams identify up to 8 students per grade level per month to participate in a four-session intensive skill program. This is a Tier 2 intervention for helping students who are on the cusp of success but need a little boost.
Student Support Team Goal
The goal of the Wellness Department is to support the equitable access to resources and skills that support the healthy development of the mind, body, and spirit.
- Mind = cognition and thinking – includes academic learning and growth, recognizing thoughts, and building an awareness and understanding of emotion information.
- Body = physical wellbeing, mental health, and the awareness of and support with recognizing and interacting with changes in physiology
- Spirit = the desire for expression and the choice of expression, includes the awareness of others and the skills necessary to see oneself as both individual and part of a group and groups. (note – the choice of expression in schools is often referred to as “behavior”)
To support positive outcomes for students across these domains, we have a counselor assigned to each grade level. Counselors provide Social Emotional Learning (SEL) instruction through full classroom lessons, small group intervention and short-term individual support.
The counseling team also works closely with our school social workers to connect students and families to support services inside and outside the school. Access to some of these services and support comes from our Student Support Fund, which is funded through the generosity of families in our community that have the means to donate. The fund is managed and utilized by our social workers. The money from this fund helps students and families access essential human goods and resources such as medication, glasses, clothing, backpacks, school supplies, scholarships, and much more. If you have questions about the Student Support Fund, please contact Bryan Manzo at bjmanzo@seattleschools.org
Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
We will be using an SEL theme each month to provide specific context for our learning.
SEL Themes:
- Community
- Citizenship
- Identity
- Connections
- Equity & Equality
- Resources
- Perseverance & Resilience
- Explanatory Style
- Perspective
- Gratitude
With support and guidance from the Wellness Dept. Head Bryan Manzo and ASB teacher Martin Rothwell, students will create a weekly podcast that introduces new skills and language for understanding how skills of self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, social management, self-efficacy, and social engagement provide people an avenue for recognizing and interacting with thoughts and feelings.
Our holistic SEL lens is an essential part of ensuring every student has equitable access to learning and supports that are necessary for a healthy mind, body, and spirit.
